We are excited to share with you the new redesign of the Cerego content authoring tool. The overarching aim of the redesign was to make content creation enjoyable and straightforward so that you can focus on what matters – making amazing, engaging content for your learners. We believe the new redesign is a big leap forward by providing the following benefits:
- Reduce amount of steps to get to the core of creating content, get in and get out quickly
- Make the start to finish flow of content creation frictionless: from selecting a template, to creating an item, the generating quizzes for your learners
- Easily see your learning path as you create your content, to see the whole picture while focusing on the details
- Improve the overall aesthetic of the user interface to be more pleasant and enjoyable
Let’s get started and see what’s new!
Item template type selection screen
We’ve made it clearer than ever to understand where to start when you create content. We’ve separated content types into three categories: Inform (instructional content), Retain (foundational Items), and Apply (application items). Depending on your learning objectives, you have the freedom to select from this palette to create your learning path
Previously, if you wanted to start creating content, you would have to scroll up and down on the set details page to see what item template options were available.
In the new design, if you enter the item editor you are greeted with all the options available to you in one place, as your options delightfully float in and welcome you to create content
Side Nav: Learning Path View
We’ve introduced a completely new way to look at your content, we call this the learning path view. Once you are in the item editor, no matter what you are doing, you will always have the option to see your learning path in the new sidenav, so you have context around what you are building.
Real time updates
In this new view, you can see your changes update and save in real time, giving you an up to date look at what your learning path looks like, and ultimately what your learners will see. This tight feedback loop will make it easier to create content with the confidence that you are affecting your overall learning plan.
Quick Quality Assurance (QA)
You can now quickly QA your content as you make it by scrolling through the side nav in either closed or open modes. In the open mode, you can get a quick glimpse of details into your item and answer questions like – Are there going to be a lot of quizzes in this set? How many concepts will my learners see? Which of my items have images and sound?
Create your learning path with ease
With the new sidenav, you can easily drag and drop items to reorder your content and create your learning path
Content creation flow
Every item has a new, more intuitive UI, but the core functionality remains almost the same. Let’s go through some of the changes that are shared by all item types, and then dive deeper into each item.
Less screens, less steps – more action
Previously, once selecting an item type, you’d see a specific screen to add your content, then go to the next screen to see your options, from there you’d go to another screen to edit quizzes.
In the new design, once you’ve selected your item type, you create all your content on one page. From adding images, to selecting quizzes, your core actions are on one page. No more clicking around and navigating to other pages!
Quiz Selection and Editing
Previously, if you wanted to select the quizzes you want available for you item, you’d have to drill down to the ‘customize’ view, pick your quiz from the drop down, and edit quizzes in a different UI.
Now, you can select the quizzes you’d like on/off from the main view, and edit your quizzes in a clean, full modal UI so you can focus on the content of the quiz.
Adding notes, additional options
Now that you’ve focused on creating your core content on the ‘Edit Content’ view, you can add notes or take any additional actions on your item.
Previously adding notes would require drilling down into a new page, like so:
In the new design, you can quickly tab over to notes, and navigate back to editing your content without losing context.
Other secondary, additional options that were previously found throughout the UI are now all in one place. Here, you can select the presentation style and clearly see what your learners will see.
Additionally, we’ve introduced the clone feature that allows you to create copies of your item.
Previewing content and time estimate
As you create your content, you’ll want to preview to see what it will look like for your learners. You can easily do this by using the preview button. Additionally, you will get an estimate of how long it will take your learners to go through your set for the first time.
As you work on your content, you can rest assured that your progress is saved, by checking the autosaving status.
Item template types
Lets take a deeper dive into whats new and improved by each item type.
Jump right in and upload existing content, such as PDFs, videos, or build a page from scratch
We’ve made it easier for you to pick what kind of media you’ll be using for your instructional content. We’ve saved you a couple of clicks, as you can now jump right into: uploading a PDF, building a page/slide from scratch, embedding media (such as power points, youtube videos, etc).
Question & Answer
The Question & Answer item template remains largely the same, but with a major UI update. You can still write simple questions and answer choices, pick between single or multiple select, and write a question wide explanation.
Associations are now called flashcard. The first thing you’ll also notice is that all your content creation options are available on the same page. We’ve simplified the naming conventions so that instead of creating an Anchor and Association, you are creating the Front and Back of a Flashcard. You can still add multiple backs in the same way you’d create multiple associations. All of your core functionality is on one page, select which quizzes you’d like your learners to see for each back.
The main difference in the new design is a cleaner UI. All of your options are presented to you on one page. Create a Vocab Term and Definition you’d like your learners to know. If you select a foreign language, the terminology changes to native term, foreign term. Add sentences, and easily select quizzes for your vocab definition on the same page.
In the new design, you’ll find that seeing your cloze selections is much easier. You can quickly create clozes and turn quizzes on and off for each of the clozes.
Create heavily visual content using the Regions item template. Easily select parts you want your learners to focus on, and quickly generate quizzes for these concepts with a click of a button. With the new embedded concept navigation, scroll quickly up and down through concepts on your item
We’ve simplified the Sequences template, and refined the features to only show you the most important components to making a compelling sequence item. The quizzing experience has been streamlined to focus on the most interactive, engaging quiz type: drag and drop. You can perform all actions, such as naming the sequence and changing the order, all on the same page.
The UI has changed, but the basic concept is the same: write several examples of a pattern for your learners, and several distractors. Your learners will be quizzed and will have to learn the pattern to get the correct answer. In the new UI, you can do this all on one page - no more clicking around.
Application Questions are now called Scenarios. We’ve kept all the functionality the same but have added drastically improved UI. You can still ask complex scenario based questions, choose single or multi select, link instructional items, and provide explanations per answer.
